Research Areas

Research fields and development framework of the CSSI project

Introduction

The CSSI – Centre for the Study of Popular Insurgencies develops its research activities across several areas of study, enabling a structured and interdisciplinary analysis of European popular insurgencies.

The approach combines historical research, source analysis and digital tools, with the aim of building a comprehensive understanding of the European context between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

European Historical Context

One key area focuses on the broader historical context in which insurgencies developed.

This includes:

  • the French Revolution
  • the Napoleonic Wars
  • political and social transformations of the period

These elements provide the necessary framework for understanding insurgent dynamics.

European Popular Insurgencies

The core focus of CSSI is the study of popular insurgencies across different European regions.

Main areas of analysis include:

  • France (Vendée, Brittany)
  • Italy (1796–1815)
  • Spain (War of Independence)
  • Tyrol (uprising of 1809)

This perspective allows for identifying both common patterns and regional differences.

Religion, Society and Territory

A fundamental research area concerns the relationship between religion, local communities and resistance dynamics.

In many cases, insurgencies are closely linked to:

  • defence of the Catholic faith
  • territorial identity
  • local communities
  • social and political traditions

Studying these aspects helps to understand the deeper motivations behind popular mobilisation.

Historical Sources and Documentation

CSSI places particular emphasis on the collection and analysis of historical sources.

These include:

  • archival documents
  • chronicles and testimonies
  • memoir literature
  • academic studies and publications

The preservation and organisation of sources are essential for building a reliable and verifiable knowledge base.

Digital Tools and Archive

A central component of the project is the development of digital tools for managing and analysing historical data.

In particular:

  • creation of a European digital archive
  • structured organisation of information
  • linking events, places and historical actors
  • use of advanced technologies for data analysis

This area represents the intersection between historical research and technological innovation.

Development Perspectives

The CSSI research areas are intended to evolve over time, through expanded research, integration of new sources and collaboration with scholars and institutions.

The goal is to establish a European reference platform for the study of popular insurgencies.
